My Ubuntu Installation
I did a post on installing Ubuntu 8.10 some time ago, and I’m always referring back to it when I to a fresh install – except it’s out of date now. I’ve decided to keep a page updated here with the info I need to get a fresh install ready to go.
Ubuntu 9.10
First up, set up Medibuntu to get multimedia and non-free packages.
Programming
Stuff I need to do my and CS and software stuff.
texmaker
Creating and compiling TeX documents.
kbibtex
TeX Bibliography management software
sun-java6-*
Official Sun Java installations
okular
Document viewer, better than the Adobe offering. Supports bookmarks.
gpodder
Podcast client, essential to keep my iPod stocked up.
subversion
Version control system, use it for source code and documents, mostly the svn client to talk to unfuddle.com’s online Subversion hosting.
NetBeans
Not the one in the repositories, install this by hand from the NetBeans site so I know where everything is.
Eclipse
Not the one in the repositories, install this by hand from the eclipse.org site so I know where everything is. Need to set up menu items manually.
Firefox Plugins
Add to Firefox from the Tools, Add-ons menu.
Delicious Bookmarks
I use delicious to persist bookmarks through installs, and get to them when I don’t have my computer to hand. Also a nice feature to have a toolbar giving favourites lists for tags I specify.
Firebug
Online debugging and performance for HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Tab Scope
Preview panel for tabs showing a thumbnail of the content.
Other Stuff
Nice to haves, random stuff, etc.
compizconfig-settings-manager
Lets me import my compiz config from my other machines.
vlc
Media player, handles YouTube-style vids. Handy for video lectures because you can speed up the playback without the chipmunk effect.
Dropbox
Sync the stuff I can’t afford to lose to the cloud. It’ll be interesting to see if Ubuntu One winds up replacing Dropbox for me, but for now I’m sticking with what I know.
